Edwards along with Gary O'Neil represent the initial candidates under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Pereira was sacked on the weekend after the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.

And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.

The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.

Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.

The 42-year-old is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the process of hiring a new head coach.

O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.

The former West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not need to provide any compensation.
