Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim First Victories Following Recent Arrests
Miami recorded eighty-six first-half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their first basketball game after player Terry Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping FBI probe into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland additionally secured their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an charge.
"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
