Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Secure Nostalgic Victory Over Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed around the ground as Forest followers reveled in a further success against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Trevor Francis’s decisive header secured the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but Forest still cherish those glorious moments. Similarly, significant changes have occurred in the weeks since the manager assumed control, with Forest looking reinvigorated and earning a convincing victory thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of progressing in the Europa League.
Building Momentum with Third Straight Victory
For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had not played for almost three weeks after ending sixth in their home competition – marked a third straight win across all competitions and further built on the positive energy generated from last weekend’s success at Anfield. While this match was a reminder of Forest’s European Cup success in name, the encounter itself was free of any significant jeopardy or nerves.
It proved to be an event filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third meeting between the teams since the European Cup final over four decades past.
Forest leaned into the history, honoring the heroes of that era by giving them, along with their Malmö opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Swedish club’s team from that time were also present. Both teams shared a meal together before the kick-off. Forest legends and their teammates received a rousing reception when they gathered on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically superb display was unveiled in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed one part of a large banner, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the players emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. Another stunning tifo depicted Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.
Dominance from the Start
So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and established a two-goal advantage by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.
It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest aged eight, made the first dent in the visitors' defense led by their own academy product skipper, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the path of the midfielder, who swept home right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to score his first goal since March.
Another Goal Seals Control
Yates was implicated in Forest’s next goal on the brink of the interval, too, his unmarked header saved by the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the loose ball from point-blank range. James McAtee, the midfielder given a seldom start and only his second outing since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the far post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was deflected aside off the defender Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City forward Uwe, and an unmarked the defender also earlier had a strong header smartly repelled by the keeper, who returned in place of the former Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
Opponent's Difficulties
This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they struggled to match Forest’s intensity. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a corner. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.
The home side then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot wide from distance. It was one of those nights. Dyche, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented seven changes from the team that stunned Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, when they also netted three times, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.
Hiccup-Free Night for Forest
It turned out to be a hiccup-free night for Forest. Dyche could take off Murillo with the game already boxed off and later brought on 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard supplying “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the present squad showed they are able of producing of excitement, too.
