Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await following their progress".
The former Harvard president, who previously led Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public messages demonstrated that the official communicated with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it understood Summers' choice to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Legislative Background
This news arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on recently to pass a measure that would mandate the US justice department to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he plans to endorse the legislation, after reversing his view on the matter following objections from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of financier-linked messages released by the legislative panel days ago referenced several well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications showed that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to link Summers to influential international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were released with the public, the former official stated he accepted "complete accountability for my poor decision to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to restore trust and fix relationships with the people closest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers occupied senior posts under party leaders; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led the institution from five years and remains a academic there. When declaring his departure from public commitments previously on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where Summers was a prominent member, verified that he was no longer affiliated with the group.
He joined the board of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
