Celebratory Displays and a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice over Agreement to Return Hostages
The declaration of an agreement expected to result in the release captives detained in the Gaza Strip for more than two years has generated delight and relief across the nation.
An organization which has campaigned for the release of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it termed a “landmark achievement”.
The agreement—which still must be approved by the Israeli war cabinet—involves the return of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
To date, 148 captives have come back—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 sets of remains have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered ahead of the deal being signed.
The gathering started applauding and dancing under American and Israeli banners—one woman displaying a sign that read: “We love Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We must witness their return home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics
The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy was palpable in the streets in Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then cheering “To life”, meaning “for life”. She has been campaigning for the release of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, with her remains recovered from a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other captives’ relatives in pushing for an agreement which ensures the return of everyone still detained within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for so long and now it’s here,” he expressed.
He stated he was “broken” that his cousin will not be among those coming back to their homes yet felt “radiant with happiness” for the families of the hostages who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she experienced like she was living “in a dream”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and all he has accomplished for us. It seems that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan feels closer than ever,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the champagne. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she affirmed.
“Numerous events might occur up to the final instant which is why we’re being so, so careful. We just want to express gratitude to all who participated in the work and ensure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only once the last captive is back home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was freed from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
