Big 12 Conference Commissioner Labels Notre Dame Comments After CFP Omission as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

At a strong criticism, Big 12 chief stated that Notre Dame athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for public criticisms about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

The Source of the Controversy

The Fighting Irish maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a full member in all other sports. The AD has argued that the ACC harmed Notre Dame’s opportunities to enter the College Football Playoff, instead advocating for the inclusion of the University of Miami.

“The ACC do great things for Notre Dame, but we provide substantial football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would go out of your way to try to damage us in this process,” Bevacqua stated.

Miami ultimately secured the CFP berth over Notre Dame, largely due to securing the head-to-head matchup between the two teams. Bevacqua additionally stated that the ACC conducted a targeted social media effort over several weeks demonstrating its support for Miami.

An Egregious Response

Later on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner responded to the criticism at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his behavior has been out of line,” Yormark stated. “He is totally out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

This public pushback is particularly striking given Bevacqua’s prominent position. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee alongside the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the interests of independent Notre Dame.

Historical Support and Future Moves

The commissioner also remarked the support the ACC gave Notre Dame in the Covid-affected 2020 season, giving the Irish a full ACC schedule and a place in its title game.

“His behavior has been egregious,” Yormark reiterated. “It’s been unacceptable attacking the ACC commissioner, when they rescued Notre Dame during Covid...”

Rumors had spread about Notre Dame possibly leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. Yet, the commissioner's strong comments on Tuesday seem to make such a partnership less likely in the near term.

Notre Dame, who reached the CFP championship game last season, have stated they plan to decline a postseason invitation after failing to qualify this season.
